Meet Kristi

Workforce Challenge

Kristi Bennett had 4 children before she turned 21. Despite being told she'd never amount to anything, she obtained her GED. However, she lacked confidence and had never received any encouragement to better herself or continue her education. Kristi was struggling to get by and was forced to apply for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Kristi’s case worker at Department of Human Resources told her about the TANF Summer work program that was being offered to youth who were in need of gaining work skills.

Workforce Solution

Kristi applied for the summer TANF work program through the Workforce Investment Act at Workforce Oklahoma in Miami where she was placed to work as an assistant in the Craig County Election Board in Vinita. Kristi was a great worker who caught on quickly and was a joy to have on staff, according to her supervisor.

Kristi enjoyed the independence that her employment was providing. She now had a car and an income, and felt the need to explore the options for full time employment since this was a temporary position that would run out at the end of the summer.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kristi applied with a nursing facility in Vinita called Rosewood Terrace. Kristi is now working as a cook at the facility earning around $9.50 per hour. She has great benefits for herself and her family and is very pleased with her position.

Kristi plans to begin taking college courses in the spring at a local community college nearby. She has an interest in becoming a Social Worker by attaining her Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Kristi has done a great job in setting goals for herself and is very determined to defy her past. She attributes her new confidence to the TANF Summer work program, which served as a stepping stone to independence from public assistance.
