Meet Chad

Workforce Challenge

Chad was attending Salina High School in Salina, OK when he first started the WIA Youth Program. He attended high school for half a day and vo-tech (vocational technical education) for half a day.

Workforce Solution

The vo-tech program offered a second-year program where the student could participate in a WIA Youth Work Experience and still earn certification in their area of study. Chad was placed on a work experience for the City of Pryor with the street department. He got the chance to use his vo-tech training at a job that could possibly lead to a permanent placement. He was given hands on experience working on trucks, cars and other heavy equipment for the city maintenance crews. Chad accompanied co-workers to various job sites throughout the town to ensure that all city vehicles were kept in good working condition. Chad married on October 17, 2009 and found out he was going to be a father soon after. His son was born in April with respiratory problems. This added to his responsibilities, but Chad continued to work hard and completed his education.

Outcomes & Benefits

Chad graduated with his high school diploma and his Auto Mechanic certification. He completed his work experience with the City of Pryor. While on the WIA Youth Program Chad faced some demanding issues but was able to succeed and take care of his new family. Upon completion of the WIA Work Experience Chad was offered and accepted a job with the City of Pryor.
