Workforce Challenge

Misti Seiss was in foster care from the time she was three years old. Going through about 15 foster homes during that time had a tremendous impact on her due to the lack of emotional support, which had a negative effect on her confidence in people as she felt she didn’t really have anyone who believed in her. As she was now 18 years old, and no longer being supported by foster care, she desperately needed to find out what career opportunities were available to her so she could support herself.

Workforce Solution

Misti was accepted into WorkForce Central's Summer Youth Employment program through an extension in November, where she became close to staff who believed in, supported and constantly encouraged her. WorkForce Central worked with Goodwill and the Coffee Buzz, located in the REACH building, to make Coffee Buzz her internship site. Through the partnership, Misti was placed in the Coffee Buzz training program, where she received classroom and hands-on barista training. After finishing the core part of the class, Misti was selected to move on to the next tier of supervisor training, which she completed. Misti became a shift supervisor, through which she was able to give back to new participants and share her experiences.

Outcomes & Benefits

Misti is now employed at the Lakewood Forzas. Staff see good things for her, as she has made an impression on all who have worked with her. “She’s been a great asset to us, and we wish her the best,” said Richard Corak, Director of Workforce Development at the Tacoma Goodwill.
