Workforce Challenge

Lisa Trabucco-Davis found herself in the situation that many in the nation have faced. After 16 years at Walmart as a Department Manager, she was laid off. Those that were in the market for positions possessed far more credentials and work experience than Lisa; additionally, at the time, the unemployment rate in Merced County was close to 18%. It was during this time that several family members developed kidney problems, and as Lisa began researching the diseases, she had an epiphany--become a nurse.

Workforce Solution

Acting on the advice from a friend, Lisa went to the Merced County One-Stop Worknet. She met Career Coach, James Chao, and was informed that a new Hemodialysis Training lab had just opened. Only the most dedicated and serious applicants would be considered by the Worknet Panel for a tuition subsidy. Lisa reassured her Career Coach of her determination and was approved; she began her training in March 2010.

Outcomes & Benefits

Twenty-four weeks of curriculum were fast-tracked into a 12-week timeframe with testing often twice a day. Lisa persevered and passed her Certified Hemodialysis Technician test. Lisa used the Worknet computer lab to apply for a position, and within 15 minutes upon submitting her application, was called for an interview. Shortly after, Lisa was hired by Satellite Health Care. Lisa said "Worknet made a big difference in my life."
