Workforce Challenge

Javier, a recent high school graduate, had intended to continue his educational path and attend college. However, his financial aid did not surface. Javier decided to examine his options and enrolled in the Out of School Youth program sponsored by the Merced County Office of Education and funded by the Workforce Investment Act.

Workforce Solution

This program helps young people by providing tools to seek successful employment or a higher education. Javier did not have a computer or access to the Internet at home, but he was able to use the computer labs to research assistance for college. He was assigned a career coach, Cyndie Bray, who recommended Javier apply to UC Merced.

Outcomes & Benefits

In the spring semester of 2007, Javier was accepted to UC Merced through a scholarship. He became very involved in student activities while earning his Political Science degree; Javier was the Student Lobby Director for the Associated Students of UC Merced. He attended the Obama Rally, the John McCain Rally, and studied in Hungary.
