Workforce Challenge

After his position was eliminated, Lyle Warnagieris was laid off from his job of 16 years as a lab manager testing products for quality and safety standards. He looked for another quality assurance position for two months but realized the demand for his skill-set and experience had dried up.

Workforce Solution

An EDD employee gave Lyle information about WIA at an "Outstanding Professionals Employment Network” (OPEN) meeting held at a Ventura County Job and Career Center. Lyle signed up for WIA services and received assistance. He collaborated with staff on his employment plan, took a WorkKeys assessment and received career guidance and labor market information. Lyle then decided to pursue a career outside of quality assurance to better his chances for employment. He selected an approved ETPL training course provider and successfully completed "Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Training with Project Management."

Outcomes & Benefits

Lyle was soon hired as a supply chain manager. Lyle attributes his new employment not only to his work experience, but also to the training opportunity and assistance he was given through WIA. His new employer plans to increase Lyle’s pay within a few months, which will get him back to his previous income level. Such a return to previous pay after an extended layoff period is an exception, not the rule, in today’s economy!
