Meet Emily

Workforce Challenge

Emily is a single mother who thought her dreams for college were over when she discovered she was pregnant her senior year in high school. Even though she was living with her mother, she needed to find a way to support herself and her child. Emily had limited work experience and while she knew she wanted to go to college, she had no idea how to apply to college or how to get financial aid.

Workforce Solution

Emily met with a WIA Youth Counselor and discused her options. Emily did career exploration and aptitude assessment to find out what kind of career she would like to have and where her strengths were in the world of work. Her WIA Youth Counselor then helped Emily find a job during the ARRA Summer Youth Work Experience Program to gain work experience for her resume.

Through the WIA Youth Program, Emily also attended counseling sessions and workshops designed to teach her how to apply for college, how to prepare for the ACT, how to budget her money, and how to manage a checking account. The WIA Youth program sponsored her in a second work experience in Summer 2010.

Outcomes & Benefits

As a result of her Summer 2010 work experience, Emily was hired full-time by her worksite. She continues to work and attend college full-time as a Pre-Education major. Emily says: "The WIA program has helped me better myself and helped me make a better life for my daughter. If it weren’t for the help and encouragement of my WIA Youth Counselor, I might have given up and never have known that I could realize a bigger dream than taking “just a job” right out of high school."
