Meet Jolene

Workforce Challenge

Jolene was referred to the WIA program from the local community college. She was a displaced worker who recently moved to the area and had no family support. She had been accepted into the nursing program and was really struggling to keep up with her financial situation. She knew that she had to continue to go to school to provide a better life for her and her children.

Workforce Solution

She was enrolled as a displaced worker and received WIA assistance with tuition, fees, books, supplies for the nursing program and money for gas and car repairs.

Outcomes & Benefits

In two years she graduated with a degree as a Registered Nurse. Within two months of graduation she accepted a nursing position in Colorado. She now makes $22 an hour and works three 12-hour shifts a week. At the second quarter follow-up with Jolene she stated that she is by no means wealthy "but I can now easily afford to put gas in my car.”
