Meet D'Andrea

Workforce Challenge

D’Andrea Smith was referred to our in-school youth program in 2008 by one of her teachers at Washington High School. The teacher said that she would be a “perfect fit” for our program and she was right. D'Andrea wanted a summer work experience but also wanted to be in the year-round program and begin career exploration activities.

Workforce Solution

D’Andrea worked during our 2008 summer work component at the Brownson House as a general laborer. After completing the summer program she began to explore different career options for life after high school and participated throughout the year. During the two years that she was in our WIA youth program, she went on various job shadows and visited many colleges/ universities. After taking D'Andrea to visit and meet with the admissions counselor at California University of PA, she decided that she “felt at home” and wanted to apply. She was accepted but knew that tuition would be a hurdle that she would have to overcome.

Outcomes & Benefits

At that time, her in-school youth coordinator contacted the admission’s counselor at California University and learned that D’Andrea could apply for a minority scholarship that would pay for her tuition for four years. She was awarded the scholarship after the committee reviewed her application. She met all requirements (having a 3.5 GPA and scoring a minimum 1000 on the SAT test). D’Andrea is now a freshman at California University of PA majoring in athletic training. Her goals are to get both a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
