Meet Van

Workforce Challenge

Van Zollicoffer had worked in the manufacturing field for a total of 21 years. When he came to the WIN Job Center he expressed his disappointment with the manufacturing industry. He had first been employed with a local company for nine years as a line leader and then he was laid off from that company due to plant closure. His next manufacturing job was with Milwaukee Electric Tool for 12 years as a receiving clerk and then he was laid off from that job due to work moving to China.

Workforce Solution

He decided that it was time for a career change. We reviewed Labor Market Information and the America's Career InfoNet. Then, after further career counseling, he decided that he wanted to go into the nursing field. He first wanted to try Certified Nurse Assistance training. Being a dislocated worker and trade affected, we had to utilize TAA benefits first. So he entered training at Holmes Community College and received his CNA license on 1/20/2009. He enjoyed work as a CNA, so he decided to further his career and become a Licensed Practical Nurse. He entered this training on 8/17/09 at Holmes Community College utilizing WIA ITA funds. He successfully completed this training and received his LPN license on 7/26/2010 and is now working happily as an LPN.

Outcomes & Benefits

Van successfully completed his training and received his LPN license on 7/26/2010 and is now working happily as an LPN. When asked about the opportunity Van said, "I want to personally thank this office and its staff for the time and patience they displayed in my time of need. It’s not easy losing a job at any time in life, but to lose a job in today’s economy, now that’s a wake-up call. But, thanks to people like Andrea Myers and others in the Kosciusko office, the transition was not as bad as I anticipated. With their guidance, I not only changed my career, but I’m actually working in that new career.”
