Workforce Challenge

Eve Sullivan was required to renew her Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping (STCW) certification in order to continue working as a Merchant Marine. She had a difficult time enrolling into the courses due to the cost, so she was unable to work. When she discovered the Harbor WorkSource Center, she decided to visit, in hopes that she could earn her certification and get back into the Merchant Marine field.

Workforce Solution

“Pacific Gateway helped me sign up for the STCW training at El Camino College. The Network was able to fund the cost of the courses, so that was really helpful,” said Ms. Sullivan.

Her hard work in the courses earned her four certificates: Basic Firefighting, Social Responsibility, Personal Survival Techniques, and First Aid/CPR.

Ms. Sullivan said that she used the Center’s computers to conduct job searches and write her resume. She also used the fax machine and copier.

MS. Sullivan was provided with job leads and let her know that the Network provided gas vouchers so that she could get to classes and interviews. She also received reimbursement for her physical, which was required to become a Merchant Marine.

When Ms. Sullivan was asked how her life now compares to her life prior to discovering the Network, she said that it has surely improved. She said that if one keeps on pushing for a career, the opportunity would come, especially with the Network.

Outcomes & Benefits

Thanks to the Network’s help, Ms. Sullivan is back to being employed as a Merchant Marine.
