Patrick was retired, financially unstable, and living in his car. A friend of his recommended visiting the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network for help with finding a job. Through the Career Transition Center, he gained the necessary skills in order to land his current job – all at no cost.

Workforce Solution

Pacific Gateway helped him build his profile in the Virtual One Stop system, an online database that allows participants to view available jobs and upload their resumes for employers to review. He attended workshops to help him build his computer and interviewing skills, learning how to use Word, Excel, and the Internet. He also learned how to build an on-line resume and prepare for an interview.

After two months of building these skills, Mr. Hermann was ready for work training. He was provided with gas vouchers so he could drive to a training site in Northridge. Brandon Williams, a VA representative, introduced him to services available for veterans at Villages at Cabrillo. There, Mr. Hermann found the appropriate clothing needed for a needed for a dress-to-impress interview with employers without spending a penny. Brandon also helped him register with the Veteran’s Hospital so that he could receive the medication he needs.

Outcomes & Benefits

The assistance really helped Mr. Hermann to turn things around. Patrick Hermann was one of the six people selected to be the Assistant Manager of Technology for the U.S. Census Bureau 2010, beating out 3,500 applicants.
