Workforce Challenge

While in high school, Reza Perl was interested in a part-time job in an office setting. He had minimal experience in the workplace and was seeking more. So, in Spring, 2010, he came to the Youth Opportunity Center (YOC) to enroll into the Pathways to Careers Program, a two-month internship program, hoping to land the internship he wanted.

Workforce Solution

In his initial interview with one of the coordinators, Reza explained the type of experience he wanted and was placed as an Office Clerk at the YOC. He was also enrolled into the Pathways to Careers training, which was a one-day, interactive six-hour class that helped him get ready to work. Through icebreakers, he learned basic etiquette and how to communicate with others in the workplace. In addition, the class taught him how to fill in his timesheets, how to dress, and how to handle situations through role-playing of different scenarios. The YOC supervisor remained available to mentor Reza, answer questions, and help him succeed.

Outcomes & Benefits

His supervisor saw Reza’s hard work and dedication to his job and offered him the opportunity to continue working through the Summer Youth Employment Training Program. He gladly accepted her offer and spent a summer working as an Office Clerk at the Hire-A-Youth Center in Long Beach. This work experience will serve him well as he finishes high school and makes plans for his future.
