Meet Roger and Travis

Workforce Challenge

Roger Burrow, 59, was a laid-off foundry worker. He had worked at the Beloit (WI) Corporation many years ago when it went bankrupt, costing him his job. He thought about returning to school but instead moved to Viola (WI) where he drove a truck until returning to a foundry job which led to another layoff. He eventually found another foundry job, one that serviced the auto industry. That too, ended. His son, Travis, also had a foundry job which ended in August, 2009.

Workforce Solution

Roger finally decided to return to school, where he received job skills and interest assessments, leading him to Southwest Tech's Electro-Mechanical Tech program within 2 weeks. WIA assistance helped with books, travel (40 miles one-way), tuition and more. He made the Dean's list all four semesters. Travis followed suit and is nearing completion of the program. However, he is also supporting a wife and five children. "I'm proud of my dad. I'm hoping I can do what he did," Travis said.

Outcomes & Benefits

As a result, Roger has an excellent position as maintenance operator at Rayovac, owned by Spectrum Brands, a global consumer products company. He's actually better off, making more per hour with full benefits. Plus the position isn't as physically-demanding. Travis is nearing the end of schooling and is hopeful of landing a similar position. "I can't say enough good things about the help I received," Roger said. "From the counselors to the case workers to the instructors, they were all great."
