Meet Case

Workforce Challenge

In Case's career he had worked as a millwright, a rough neck in the oil field, and similar industrial jobs that required traveling away from home. In December 2006, he was laid off due to the slowdown in the economy. After six months of searching he was able to find a job at a much lower rate of pay; a job he lost a year later. It was at this point that he decided that he needed to make a career change. He obtained information about the nursing field and decided return to school to earn a nursing degree and license. He began the nursing program at Southwest Mississippi Community College in August 2008, but struggled to pay tuition and living expenses while completing his degree.

Workforce Solution

At school, Case learned about the WIA program offered through the WIN Job Center. In May 2009, Mr. Lofton came to the Brookhaven WIN Job Center and talked with its WIA and Education coordinators. After successfully completing the required tests, attending orientation, and returning the Individual Training Account (ITA) packet, he was selected to receive an ITA award.

Outcomes & Benefits

Case completed his Associate Degree Nurse training on May 13, 2010. He obtained his nursing license on June 28 and is currently working at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Meadville, MS as an RN at $21.70 an hour. He states that the skills he received during his training enabled him to be able to help the people in the community where he lives. His job is challenging and rewarding and he is very thankful to the Brookhaven WIN Job Center for helping him achieve his career goals.
