Meet Lindsey

Workforce Challenge

Lindsey Rowell entered the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program at Holmes Community College in Goodman, MS in 2009. She applied for a Pell Grant before entering the program and was granted the eligible amount. However, Pell funds aren’t received until later in the first semester, so Lindsey knew she needed some way to get uniforms for clinical rotation, school supplies, and other things to make it through the year.

Workforce Solution

Lindsey heard about WIA through the instructors at the college and applied for it. She was qualified for WIA and granted assistance to pay for uniforms and other supplies. Lindsey says, “The year I was in the program was the hardest year that I have ever had to endure. I studied hours every day for almost a year. I spent seven and a half hours a day, four days a week, with my instructors, not counting the hours that we listened to them on podcasts. The whole year was very hard for us students that didn’t have the financial stability to travel an hour to school every day.”

She continued, “I am very grateful for the many financial programs that we are fortunate enough to be offered. I am so very happy that I applied for the LPN program. All of the studying and stressing I did during that year finally paid off and I was awarded the Practical Nursing Award in the Spring Semester.”

Outcomes & Benefits

Lindsey graduated on June 24, 2010, and was the class valedictorian. She is now an LPN at a Nursing home, and enjoys every minute of her work. She thanks the college staff and faculty, Pell and WIA assistance, and the WIN Job Center staff saying, “I cannot express my gratitude for everyone that works in favor of all students.”
