Meet Greg

Workforce Challenge

After 24 years of service, Greg retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class from the U.S. Army. During those years, he was directly responsible for supervising and training up to 100 personnel at any given time. A respected, decorated veteran, with an extensive post-graduate education (he's only two courses shy of obtaining his MBA), Greg lost his job as Community Coordinator for a local business. Given the economic climate, he knew he would encounter problems finding work.

Workforce Solution

In January 2010, Greg applied for services with Madera County Workforce Development. He attended the resume workshop, where he created a professional resume and the interview workshop, where he not only participated in a mock interview, but also gave a mock presentation in preparation of an extensive job interview before a panel of three supervisors. Constructive feedback from WDO staff assisted Greg in polishing his presentation.

Outcomes & Benefits

To make ends meet, Greg accepted a front-end supervisory position with a local hardware retailer. His goal, though, was to relocate to Sacramento to be closer to his three children. In June 2010, he applied for a position with the State of California, completing a brief online test to determine eligibility and ranking. Once the results were scored, Greg, one of 5,000 job applicants for this position, was ranked as the number 1 candidate, and he is now residing and working in Sacramento.
