Workforce Challenge

David, a veteran, lost his job in 2009 and was barely making ends meet by doing odd jobs here and there. In order to find long-term employment, he realized he needed tips on becoming job-ready, improved computer skills, and assistance in finding steady work.

Workforce Solution

David attended a resume workshop at the Madera County Workforce Development Office (WDO) and a Veterans Employment-Related Assistance Program (VEAP) Grant presentation. He participated in mock interviews, and utilized WDO resources, spending countless hours searching online for work. He was given several job leads to pursue, and with WDO encouragement and support, he took the initiative to "pound the pavement" in order to network with local employers.

Outcomes & Benefits

In April 2010, his persistence paid-off when he began employment through On-the-Job Training with H&L Lumber in Oakhurst. Once the OJT contract ends, it is anticipated that David will become a full-time employee with this organization. "It is because of the positive encouragement I received from [WDO] staff that I became more confident and now have a job I love… one where I have the opportunity to meet, assist and interact with my community."
