Workforce Challenge

In March 2010, both Denise and her husband were laid-off due to the slow economy and company downsizing. The dramatic drop in income forced the couple move to a less expensive, smaller home to remain within budget. Living within the confines of unemployment benefits was a lifestyle Denise had never experienced before. She realized she was facing a competitive job market and would need assistance to become job-ready to find work.

Workforce Solution

Denise came to Madera County Workforce Development in April 2010. She attended the resume workshop, where she not only upgraded her resume, but learned the importance of a quality resume and cover letter, the importance of the opportunity to interview and the value of learning from each experience, whether she landed the job or not. She networked with neighbors, was given interviewing tips and prospective job leads. WDO encouragement kept Denise motivated and open to each opportunity.

Outcomes & Benefits

In early June 2009, Denise was hired as Front Office Assistant for a local medical group. She loves what she's doing, loves working with and helping the public, and finds that her own personal experience has made her more empathetic and tolerant of others. "I know what it's like to feel depressed, to feel like nothing is going right in your life. It is comforting to know that there are agencies out there like Workforce that can help through difficult times."
