Workforce Challenge

Guy was earning a decent income as an Electrician, a job he enjoyed, until he was laid-off in 2006. With transportation problems and limited income, Guy scoured the local area for work with no success. After two years of dead-job leads and nothing promising on the horizon, Guy decided he needed assistance.

Workforce Solution

In late 2008, Guy came to Madera County Workforce Development for services. He took WorkKeys (work readiness testing), scoring high marks. Interest/talent testing indicated a strong interest in mechanical and industrial areas, and Temperament testing showed a strong preference for working in customer service. WDO staff provided Guy with Labor Market Information and encouraged him to visit local business owners to introduce himself, drop off his resume and advise them that he was eligible for On-the-Job Training funds.

Outcomes & Benefits

Guy revisited a local employer, who was interested in hiring Guy through an OJT contract. WDO staff worked diligently to ensure this would be a successful placement and in November 2009, when the contract ended, Guy became a permanent fixture at the hardware retailer. He is so good at what he does that he has been recognized as the store's top salesman for several months. "After being out of work for three years, I was becoming pretty depressed. WDO was a great resource for me."
