Workforce Challenge

Patricia has had a more difficult time than most when it comes to the unstable job market and uncertain economy. In 2007, the mortgage company she worked for closed due to the housing slump. Then, in 2009, she was laid-off when her employer filed for bankruptcy and closed. The following year, she found herself unemployed once more, having lost her job at a local resort.

Workforce Solution

Patricia was tested in WorkKeys (a work-readiness assessment), scoring above-average marks, which helped to boost her self-confidence. She also attended Madera County Workforce Development's workshops, where she upgraded and updated her resume, was coached in online job search and was referred for local jobs that matched her skill-base. Patricia went on a few interviews, and even though she was not hired, it gave her interview experience, and she remained positive and open to all possibilities and opportunities.

Outcomes & Benefits

As it turns out, three is both an unlucky and lucky number for Patricia. She lost three jobs in a relatively short period of time and went on three job interviews before she was hired. In early July 2010, she began working at the Old Corral Grocery Store in Bass Lake as a cashier/counter clerk. She is thrilled to be working locally, and is now earning more income with fewer commuter miles.
