Workforce Challenge

In February 2009, after having been laid-off due to a sluggish economy, Steffan came to the Madera County Workforce Development Office in Oakhurst for assistance. A single father of one, he felt compelled to upgrade his skills in order to become more self-sufficient and provide a better life for his child.

Workforce Solution

Workforce staff administered WorkKeys, a work-readiness assessment on which Steffan scored high marks. Interest Assessments indicated strong preferences in teaching, mechanical and scientific areas. Steffan was assisted in exploring a number of job-related websites and ultimately decided retraining was his best option. Using WIA funding, in July 2009, he began training as a Network Support Technician with the Institute of Technology in Clovis, California. In conjunction, he also volunteered in the Chawanakee USD Computer Department.

Outcomes & Benefits

Steffan proved to be an outstanding student. Instructor evaluations and reports indicated excellent marks in attendance, punctuality, attitude, and performance in both classroom and homework assignments. Upon graduation in April 2010, he was offered an IT position through Chawanakee, working at the North Fork Elementary School until the end of the school year. It is anticipated that Steffan will be rehired through Chawanakee as an IT technician for Minarets High School in O'Neals, California.
