Workforce Challenge

Lamont enrolled as a 16-year old in the WIA In-School Employability Skills class. From day one, Lamont showed leadership potential. Gloria Turner, Lamont’s Employability Skills Instructor, stated, “Lamont was a fantastic, well rounded student. He was very humble and when he set his mind to achieve a goal; whether football, show choir, or academics, he made it happen. Even though he lived 20 miles from school, with limited transportation, he met his school and work obligations every day.” Part of this program is placement at a worksite upon completion of the course.

Workforce Solution

Lamont’s WIA worksite placement was with the West Point Growth Alliance; there, he proved to be such a valuable asset to the business that upon completion of his WIA work experience hours, the company found additional funds to keep him on as a part-time employee. Martha Allen of the Growth Alliance described him as one of the best workers they have ever had. Ms. Allen stated, “Lamont came to us at the Growth Alliance with the perfect attitude. He was eager to learn and willing to work. Lamont was very aware that the more he learned before entering the real world the more successful he would be once he got there. Lamont met many business professionals in the community that will care about his future choices and help him to form any future plans."

Outcomes & Benefits

Lamont is currently attending East Mississippi Community College, Mayhew campus, and now works a part-time job at Fred’s Discount Store while maintaining his academic responsibilities. Upon completion of his studies at EMCC, he plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in Banking and Finance. The GTPDD WIA staff congratulates Lamont on all his accomplishments and wishes him well in his future endeavors. For Lamont, and others like him, the sky is the limit.
