Oregon Surgery Center

Workforce Challenge

Douglas County did not have enough trained healthcare personnel to meet community needs.

Workforce Solution

The Oregon Workforce Alliance, the Local Workforce Investment Board for rural Oregon, provided resources that allowed the Oregon Surgery Center to partner community based organizations to provide certified nursing assistants with the skills necessary to perform in the operating room and endoscopy suites. Perioperative and Endoscopy training was provided for certified nursing assistants (CNA) at the Oregon Surgery Center. This training provided the skills needed for CNA's to assist in the surgical suites and fill an unfilled role due to a shortage of nurses.

Outcomes & Benefits

“The training has allowed the employees to increase their knowledge and employability in the medical field; these skills can be taken anywhere. The Center benefits by having employees that understand the entire picture thus enabling them to provide the best care,” stated Tammy King-Rice, Clinical Manager. According to Amy Mecalf, a trainee, “This program is both physically and mentally challenging. We are learning every day and the hands-on classes give us the foundation in knowing what to do and why we are doing it.”
