SJL Construction

Workforce Challenge

SJL Construction is a six employee company that saw opportunities to become a comprehensive construction restoration business. SJL operated a certified restoration business in the fire/water/storm/mold markets but had been turning away jobs for asbestos abatement due to the lack of certification to perform the work; training for asbestos or lead abatement certification was not available in Southern Oregon.

Workforce Solution

SJL asked its Local Workforce Investment Board for help. The board funded training for initial worker and supervisor asbestos abatement certification. Employees traveled to Coos Bay to obtain the necessary certification training.

Outcomes & Benefits

SJL is now accepting asbestos abatement jobs, anticipating a 25% increase in demand for restoration project, and hiring new workers. “As a result of the certifications obtained by SJL Construction our business will be able to hire people locally and gain accounts outside of this area to bring more economic growth into the area,” stated John Bestul, CEO. We have had to pass up opportunities in the past because of the lack of certifications. We expect to be a viable and growing company through our added business in new restoration markets like asbestos.”
