NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center

Workforce Challenge

Due to high unemployment in the construction trades, many journey level workers have found themselves out of work and looking for some productive way to spend their time.

Workforce Solution

The NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center (NIETC) partnered with Worksystems, Inc. the Local Workforce Investment Board to take advantage of idle time by enhancing journey level training. Resources from WSI allowed NIETC to offer classes at a reduced fee and provide courses on varied schedules to meet the needs of the members. The NIETC also constructed a “Mobile Solar Trainer” specifically for the classes and was able to showcase the combined program at the annual NECA Show held in Seattle last September. The trainer was also showcased at the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus annual convention held in Portland during the MLK weekend, in January 2010.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through this collaboration, NIETC was able to host 25 separate courses focused on the latest technology in Photovoltaics, with over 480 participants attending and 129 following up by seeking Certifications. These newly trained workers stand eager to apply what they have learned, while improving the community that they live in.
