Workforce Challenge

Several years ago, Worksystems, Inc. (WSI), the Workforce Investment Board for the Portland Metro area began working with the Oregon Bioscience Association (OBA) on initiatives to assure a highly skilled workforce for the industry. In a pilot effort in 2006-2007, WSI partnered with OBA to offer FDA regulatory training to workers in local bioscience companies. In 2008, WSI and OBA convened an industry-led “skill panel” to clarify the industry’s skill needs and identify ways to meet those needs. The result was a partnership branded as BioPro, serving 35 companies, including Genentech, Welch Allyn, HemCon, Microsystems Engineering/Biotronik, and Tyco Electronics.

Workforce Solution

BioPro courses have covered such topics as the FDA regulatory environment, quality system management, inspection, corrective and preventive actions, production & process control, lean principles, statistics, technical writing, planning/time management, team building, and project management. The bioscience skill panel staffed by Worksystems, Inc. plays a vital role adding, deleting, and modifying courses in response to industry demand.

Outcomes & Benefits

This training partnership between an industry association and the Workforce Investment Board is helping to grow the Oregon’s bioscience cluster. Companies state that (1) they are more engaged with each other and with regional workforce, economic development, and training partners; (2) the training helps with their employee retention goals; and (3) the BioPro partnership has made training much more accessible.
