Workforce Challenge

Products that carry the label “Made in USA” just aren’t as common as they used to be. With overseas quality and technology becoming more on par with those in the U.S—and as companies grow on a global scale—cost has become the main driver in determining where companies base their manufacturing. XpanD, a creator of 3D glasses and related products in Beaverton, is constantly challenged to stay competitive with foreign-sourced production when it comes to the cost of labor and training. As a manufacturer of a niche product, XpanD needed to develop its operational capacity and bring new hires quickly up to speed. It turned to its Local Workforce Investment Board, Worksystems, Inc. (WSI).

Workforce Solution

WSI worked with XpanD to help bring down the cost of hiring and training employees by providing the company with qualified candidates and providing on-the-job training funds to help these candidates gain company specific skills. WSI utilized the WorkSource one-stop system to develop a custom solution that packaged federally subsidized on-the-job training, employee recruitment and training and job matching assistance utilizing Oregon’s iMatchSkills data base. The ability to affordably find and grow talent allowed XpanD to keep payroll in Oregon and increase their employees’ skills and earning power.

Outcomes & Benefits

Andrew Bauroth, Director of Manufacturing stated “When we first found out the training services offered through WorkSource, I said, ‘Why isn’t everyone doing this?’ It gave us the opportunity to provide our workers with higher pay and a higher level of skill with less financial risk. And they were easy to work with. Jacob came in at all hours of the day and night to accommodate our schedule.”
