Workforce Success Story Submitted By:
Pikes Peak Workforce Center

Meet John

Workforce Challenge

John came to Pikes Peak Workforce Center while he was homeless and living at the Springs Rescue Mission, after having been convicted of a felony. He had been unemployed for more than a year and needed to find work as soon as possible.

Workforce Solution

At the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, John met with one of our Workforce Development Specialists, Kay, who gave him a WIOA application in January 2018. Two weeks later, he brought back the application and Kay enrolled him into the program that same day. She also worked with him one-on-one to write a resume that would accurately reflect his work experience and discovered that he had worked in the past for a roofing company for a short time. Kay then assisted him with job searching.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kay let him know about one of our business clients, a roofing company that was doing On-the-Job Training and helped him apply for that program. As part of this process, John also successfully passed three Provit exams and passed an OSHA class/test that the employer routinely requests before hiring candidates.
John was hired in February 2018. Before he started work, Kay arranged for him to receive a bus pass, as he does not have transportation; non-skid boots, to safely work on rooftops; and his own set of tools necessary to perform his job. Both the client and case manager were very excited about the successful and quick outcome!
