Meet Deina

Workforce Challenge

Deina and her husband, Brandon, saw their Colorado Works benefits discontinue due to their rising household income level in February 2017. Deina was working about 20 hours/week for a work study in the General Family Medicine department while attending her final semester with the University of Colorado at Denver. Her husband was working full-time as a stone cutter, but the contract was terminated by the employer in the same month their cash benefits ended and food assistance decreased.

Workforce Solution

Their Workforce Specialist was able to transition the case into the post-TANF program for continued support and assistance. While Brandon was no longer employed and therefore not eligible for the program directly, Deina had impressed her supervisor enough to be offered increased hours to take over for an employee that would be gone on maternity leave for an extended period of time. Through the post-TANF program, the Workforce Specialist determined that by stabilizing the family’s budgetary needs, this would enable Deina to focus more intently on finishing her degree and continuing to impress at her work study job.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through the Post TANF Program, Deina was able to get financial, transportation, and budget management assistance. Upon her graduation in May, she was offered a full-time position and pay increase with her employer. Her stable hours allowed her husband to accept a full-time position earning more income than his previous position. Deina's post-TANF case closed and serves as an outstanding example of the program assisting families in obtaining livable wages.
