Meet Duane

Workforce Challenge

Duane came into the Workforce Center near the end of May, 2017, after being laid off. Duane had been working as a parts sales/delivery person and before that, as an auto mechanic for many years. He felt he had primarily lost his job because he did not know how to use a computer. His employer had explained that the company was going a different direction and computer skills were necessary for him to work at the counter. He qualified for unemployment and immediately began looking for a job.

Workforce Solution

Duane began visiting the Workforce Center weekly, sometimes two or three times/week. In getting to know him, we learned that his brother whom he had always lived with had passed away in the last year and his best friend had recently passed away as well. Duane was feeling down and discouraged and most positions he wanted to apply for required completing an online application. His true lack of familiarity and skills with computers required frequent staff assistance, but Duane was persistent in his job search. Our office's four staff members spent many hours helping him navigate online applications.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completing the online application and the interview process for the local school district, Duane successfully obtained a full-time custodial position at the middle school and he has been employed since this past September, 2017. In addition to getting a job, Duane overcame his fear of using computers and obtained some basic computer skills that will hopefully help him in the future.
