Working Again

Workforce Challenge

Ms. M, a U.S. military veteran, served nearly 7 years as a Marine NCO. After her military service she earned a credential and got a job as an Insurance Underwriter at an annual salary of $40,000. She advanced to Underwriting Consultant and earned $73,000. In 2009 a company merger led to her being laid off. She could not find a comparable position. Time passed and Ms. M joined the ranks of the long-term unemployed. “I was convinced that if I could find a job at all it would be at a much lower salary and level of experience."

Workforce Solution

Ms. M came to the JobNet Career Center and took advantage of the intensive services provided by a Veteran’s Representative at the Career Center. He worked closely one on one with her, sourcing leads, coaching her, supporting her, counseling her, and referring her to the array of job search assistance services and events available at the career center and throughout the region.

Outcomes & Benefits

In late 2010 Ms. M applied for an Underwriting job. She received an offer and was hired at a salary of $83,000 with a significant bonus/incentive structure that will provide her the opportunity to earn around $100,000 annually. "The support I received from the career center and especially from my Veterans Representative was invaluable. I could not have done this without them," said Ms. M
