Meet Juan

Workforce Challenge

Juan was referred from Adams Five Star Schools Pathways Future Center to get help with credit recovery needed to achieve his high school equivalency diploma. The high costs of these credits can make it difficult for young adults to register and complete due to limited finances.

Workforce Solution

Juan was enrolled in the WIOA Youth Succeed program to get financial assistance with his credit recovery needs. Juan's first attempt was not successful. He had to maintain a full time job to help support his family and was not able to attend school regularly. Juan had to make the decision that he had to take care of his family with the hope of returning to school at the next opportunity. Providing encouragement and motivation was key in getting Juan to return to classes. In fact, Juan had to leave the country to work in Mexico over the summer and maintaining contact through calls and texts proved beneficial for his diploma completion.

Outcomes & Benefits

Juan returned from Mexico, met with his case manager, completed his new plan, and registered with Pathways Future Center to begin classes fall 2017. Youth Succeed assisted with his credit recovery costs, and he successfully graduated early in September, 2017. The program also paid for his cap and gown for graduation ceremony in December, 2017. Juan is working to get into college and looking at police academy programs with his case manager to begin his career pathway to enter the field of law enforcement.
