Meet Jessica

Workforce Challenge

Jessica, a 20-year-old single mother who was employed as an evening janitor, faced multiple insecurities in parenting and employment, as well as personally. She had no family other than her young daughter and lacked confidence in her ability to communicate in English. She also did not feel stable in her employment. She had only worked in manual labor since graduating high school, but she wanted something better for her family.

Workforce Solution

Jessica was referred to the WIOA Youth program. She expressed to her WIOA Youth case manager an interest in a career in the dental field; however, Jessica needed to increase her reading and basic math skills before she could benefit from training. She received tutoring through the WIOA Youth program and increased her reading and math skills by five grade levels! It was also determined that Jessica needed glasses. She was able to receive supportive services and obtained corrective lenses. Through WIOA, Jessica enrolled in training at the Academy of Dental Assisting and then participated in a paid internship at Comfort Dental, providing her a work-based learning experience in addition to training.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jessica was hired as a full time dental assistant with Comfort Dental. She feels she is a positive role model for her daughter and her sisters, who have recently joined her. Jessica is grateful to WfBC for the opportunities and support she received in finding her career pathway, and in addition, she is grateful for all the encouragement she received.
