Meet Dustin

Workforce Challenge

Dustin faced many challenges to finding employment: no high school diploma or GED, on parole, and few job skills. Unable to find employment and living with his grandparents, he was considered low income and homeless. Dustin lacked confidence and support to complete his goals of obtaining a GED and attending CDLA training.

Workforce Solution

With the support of workforce center staff, Dustin completed TABE testing and enrolled in WIOA Out of School Youth. This program provided Dustin with GED testing, assistance completing CDLA training and permit, and transportation reimbursement to attend CDLA permit testing. Dustin also received incentive payments for completing his GED. The workforce center partnered with two other agencies, DOC Reemployment and Human Services, to pay for Dustin's training (DOC) and to pay for housing and food to attend training (Human Services).

Outcomes & Benefits

Through numerous career coaching sessions that provided encouragement and support, Dustin was able to attend GED classes. He completed his GED in three months while also studying and completing the CDLA permit. Transportation costs were reimbursed as Supplemental Service and GED tests were paid out of WIOA youth. Dustin is now attending CDLA training with housing & food assistance.
