Workforce Challenge

Marvin was employed as a machinist, but he couldn’t advance in his career because he did not have the required certifications. He began CNC Programming courses at Kirtland Community College, which is where he heard about the possibility of tuition assistance through Michigan Works!

Workforce Solution

Working with Michigan Works! Career Advisor Jenna, Marvin applied for and was granted funding assistance for his remaining two semesters to complete the CNC Programming program. Michigan Works! was able to help Marvin with not only tuition, but also books and fees to earn his CNC Machinist certification, as well as mileage reimbursement to/from classes. (His courses at M-TEC college in Gaylord were a 70 mile trip, 3-4 days a week.)

“The application process was not complicated,” said Marvin. “Everyone at the college and Michigan Works! were very friendly and helpful.”

Outcomes & Benefits

During his last semester with Kirtland, Marvin had several job interviews thanks to contacts he had made at the school. One resulted in him being hired into a new job in the closing week of his training. Marvin reports the new position offers a significant base pay increase, 25% more than he made as a machinist, and an exceptional benefits package.

With Michigan Works! tuition assistance, Marvin was able to complete the CNC Programming program, earn his certificate, and advance his career.
