Meet Joel

Workforce Challenge

Joel was recently released from the military. He was looking for employment and found himself homeless and unemployed in an area in which finding work can be difficult. Added to that, his experience and training was very specific to medical lab and oil lab work. He was searching for work, but having trouble finding the work that he was qualified for, and work that would allow him to live in his own home.

Workforce Solution

Joel came into the South Central Workforce Office in Alamosa and registered for work. During the registration process, he was referred to various possibilities for work. Workforce staff checked on additional jobs that were not listed with Connecting Colorado, and found a medical lab job. Staff contacted the hiring manager for the department and briefly described Joel's qualifications and skills. From that point Joel was referred to the WIOA partner, The Training Advantage. Both staff from the Training Advantage and State Workforce worked with Joel and SLV Health to assist with employment for Joel. An on-the-job training position was set up with SLV Health for Joel.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through team work and partnering, Joel, a returned military veteran, began employment with SLV Health of Alamosa, Colorado. This job is not only a job in which he had measurable skills and interest, but it also can lead into a long-time career for this veteran. Joel hopes to have his own place soon and to continue his career in a field that suits his abilities and interests.
