Meet Michel

Workforce Challenge

Michael came to WFC as a dislocated worker after being laid off. He also faced the challenge of having a criminal history, which could impact his ability to enter the solar energy field in sales. He was receiving UI and could barely make ends meet with that income. He went through the WFC WIRED grant back in 2008, and since then he has been looking at getting stable employment in the renewable energy industry.

Workforce Solution

Michael felt this was the best opportunity as the employer wanted him to learn about and make sales in not only solar but also including energy efficiency HVAC, windows, insulation, and roofing. He needed to learn the product knowledge prior to being able to make the right sales. Micheal had extensive sales background but not the industry knowledge. The OJT program was a great fit for Michael. He advertised the OJT program at his interview to the employer, and the employer let him know this will be the perfect way to hire him. He can be a stellar energy employee once the OJT was complete as he now has the industry knowledge he needed.

Outcomes & Benefits

Michael is a happy employee at Stellar Energy now earning 65% more than at his previous job. He stated, "Stellar Energy is a great company to work at! I am consistently challenged everyday with new details in providing residential and commercial customers with energy solutions. The team here is great. My training plan is going well and the constant
information that flows across my desk is truly a learning experience. I look forward to conveying just how good the OJT program is for employers and employees."
