Meet Nancy

Workforce Challenge

When Nancy's husband went to prison, Nancy found herself homeless and without any personal belongings. All of her previous household/personal belongings were sent to a storage unit out of town, which was locked. Her situation left her behind on payments, so she couldn’t access her belongings. She was able to move in with a friend, but unfortunately she lost her job due to the chaos of the situation she found herself in.

Workforce Solution

Nancy came to Michigan Works! in Gaylord for Support Services, including a clothing allowance toward work clothing and mileage reimbursement during her job search. Fortunately, the owner of the storage unit agreed to not sell her belongings, as long as she kept in contact monthly with updates.

Michigan Works! staff continued to encourage Nancy not to give up, even when she was initially hired at a retail store, but never given a start date. Nancy didn’t lose hope and kept a positive attitude and it paid off. Her past employer at a resort called her back and rehired her!

Outcomes & Benefits

”Thank you Michigan Works! for the services provided, including the clothing vouchers and transportation support. I couldn’t have made it without your help,” stated Nancy. “[I’ve learned to] never give up and keep trying! Sometimes you have to ask for help even if it hurts your pride, but you have to keep going.”
