Meet Erin

Workforce Challenge

Erin was very eager to find her first job. A teacher from Cerritos College who taught computer classes at the America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) in Cerritos referred Erin to the AJCC, Cerritos, in May 2016. Erin enrolled into the Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board (SELACO WDB) for job search assistance. Her biggest challenges were her lack of paid work experience and not being able to interview well.

Workforce Solution

Because of her love for basketball, Erin hoped to eventually find work in sports or coaching. Since 2010, Erin had been volunteering for various organizations, which included a role as an assistant coach for a high school in Downey. Keeping her positive attitude, Erin continued to look for work online and in-person. She also attended Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS), the Job Search Workshops and Job Club at the AJCC, Cerritos. Erin kept in touch with her Career Development Specialist (CDS) who provided guidance and helped her prepare her résumé. As her self-confidence grew, Erin started talking to hiring managers in local businesses. Erin paid a visit and applied at the local Dollar Tree discount store.

Outcomes & Benefits

After receiving no response from the Dollar Tree, Erin revisited the store and learned they were hiring part-time. Her CDS convinced her to apply again. She did apply and followed up with another visit. By now, the store manager was pretty impressed with Erin’s genuine interest. She had an interview and shortly after, received a job offer as a store stocker. She has been doing very well and expressed that she really enjoys working in a comfortable environment where she can be herself.
