Workforce Challenge

Recent census data showed that a high percentage of working-age adults in Southwestern Virginia lack a high school-level credential and/or basic entry-level job skills. To address this gap between worker skills and employer requirements, a new initiative was needed. The need has been addressed through a multi-agency collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Virginia Department of Education and the local Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs. The initiative is funded in part and supported by the Southwest Virginia Workforce Investment Board.

Workforce Solution

"PlugGED In Virginia" is a new segment of adult education offered through the WIA - Adult Education Connection. PlugGED In provides learners with a contextualized GED® program that includes technical training to develop essential workplace skills for targeted entry-level jobs. Individuals who complete the curriculum will earn a GED certificate, build a technology portfolio, earn Microsoft certifications and earn a Career Readiness Certificate. The goal is to transition adults into the workplace and/or college.

Outcomes & Benefits

Graduates of the program have had positive experiences and have better-defined goals for their future. Quotes from participants demonstrate the initial success of the program.

“Math was not my strong point. Now, I’ll be ready for the college math I need.” - Richard Collins
“I have learned how to use Microsoft Office and have had the opportunity to do presentations and mini-capstone projects.” - Misty Louya
“I have learned to re-evaluate my writing skills. It is so important to be able to speak and write properly in the business world.” - Sandra Lester

Each of these three participants elected to continue their education and is currently enrolled in IT classes at a local community college.
