Meet Nathan

Workforce Challenge

Nathan's mother was a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipient and Nathan was participating in the Job Opportunity Basic Skills (JOBS)program. As a JOBS participant, Nathan was required to obtain a General Educational Development (GED) diploma. He attended classes at the Adult Learning Center and received his diploma, but needed assistance securing employment.

Workforce Solution

At the One Stop, Nathan completed interest and skill assessments and discovered an interest in the nursing and medical field. Workforce Investment Act (WIA)funds helped him to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course at Northland Technical College. After graduating with his CNA certificate, he still had difficulty finding employment, so WIA funds were again utilized to fund a work experience at Valley Memorial Homes.

Outcomes & Benefits

The Director of Nursing at Valley Memorial Homes said that Nathan turned out to be one of their best employees and an excellent member of their team. He was hired full-time and staff at Valley Memorial recommended that Nathan enroll in the Certified Medical Administration (CMA) course. WIA funds allowed him to complete the CMA training. With the additional credential he earns over $13 per hour with full benefits, and currently attends college part-time. He plans to begin a Pharmacy Technician Program in the future.
