Meet Maria

Workforce Challenge

Maria is a single mom with a five-year-old son. She was working as a hair dresser and she was on food stamps. She needed a career with a better and more stable income. She came to us requesting a WIOA scholarship to attend school to obtain a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification.

Workforce Solution

Maria was approved for a WIOA scholarship to attend school for LPN training. She worked very hard and really struggled the first term of her training. With encouragement from us and her mom, she decided to continue her training, but she couldn't handle the full time hours of training with caring for her son. So, she continued her training on a part-time basis which extended her training time another six months.

Outcomes & Benefits

Maria did graduate (with good grades) and received her LPN license. She obtained employment with a major healthcare organization, and is now working as an LPN making 70% more than she did as a hair dresser. This income will enable Maria to get off of food stamps and will provide enough income to support herself and her son. Her mom will help with daycare until she starts receiving regular paychecks.
