Meet John

Workforce Challenge

John began working with a Kansas WorkforceONE’s Employment Specialist six months prior to his release from prison back into the community. He had been incarcerated for over seven years and did not have any work history aside from the jobs performed inside of the prison. His skill set was low, and he did not have a high school diploma. He was also releasing from prison with no housing options and zero resources in the community. He was in need of a job that could lead to self-sufficiency.

Workforce Solution

With the help of a WIOA Employment Specialist, John developed a strategy to overcome his identified barriers. This included assistance to obtain a GED before releasing from prison, a referral connecting him with a mentor, housing support options, and assistance in creating a professional resume. John was prepared to give an effective job interview and went through several mock interviews. His self-confidence was strengthened, soft skills improved, and transferable skills identified. His Employment Specialist helped him develop a plan to avoid or cope with people, places, and things that caused problems in the past. His Employment Specialist also worked with his mentor to set up a viable support system in the community and to identify employment options in the community.

Outcomes & Benefits

His WIOA Employment Specialist secured housing for the John and made connections with employers prior to his release from prison. John earned his GED before releasing from prison, then began working in the agricultural industry within the first week after releasing from prison. He has maintained the job for the past five months. John was given a full benefits package and gets several hours of overtime every week. He has a new, positive outlook on his life and career. The future looks bright for both him and his family.
