Motoring Services Auto Repair

Workforce Challenge

For over thirty (30) years, Motoring Services Auto Repair has operated in the Tri-Cities area. They offer total car care as well as free towing and shuttle service. The challenge for this long-established company was to better utilize technician billable hours and train the service advisor to increase sales. The shop has six (6) employees and it was decided that team training as well as the operational training would be beneficial.

Workforce Solution

Motoring Services identified a training provider, CompuTrek, that would provide training onsite, a perfect solution to their needs. They negotiated a full three (3) days of service training plus a short two (2) hour teambuilding session. Motoring Services requested funding through the PY09 Governor’s 10% Reserve Fund for Local Demand Training. Total cost of the training and the request was $4500.00. To access this training fund, Motoring Services provided a $2731.93 match by paying the participants’ wages while in training.

Outcomes & Benefits

The training was provided onsite August 2-5, 2010. Within two (2) weeks of completion of the training, billable hours per invoice went from 1.89 hours to almost 4.0 hours. Two of the technicians also received $5.00 an hour raises. In checking in at the beginning of 2011, Motoring Services reported prior to the training, they had been on target for their sales goal, but due to the training, had exceeded the goal by 12%.
