Lourdes Health Network

Workforce Challenge

Lourdes Health Network is constantly working to provide specialized education and training to the many healthcare professionals who work within their facilities. In the face of various institutional cuts due to the climate in the healthcare industry, many opportunities for professional growth and training among staff have declined. Lourdes is a regional hub for orthopaedic surgery, and it was critical that their physical therapists maintain credentials through current certifications and continuing education credits, but funds for providing this training through the hospital were very limited.

Workforce Solution

Lourdes had a long-standing relationship with the Workforce Development Council (WDC) through WorkSource Columbia Basin, where they've been a strong partner in youth Work Experience placements. The Business Services Representative suggested the availability of Incumbent Worker Grant funds to cover some of the costs of the specialized the physical therapy department needed.

After a review, the WDC determined that the proposed training qualified under the demand occupation list, and helped Lourdes apply for the training funds. Once approved, the WDC processed all of their registration forms, and checked for/entered selective service registrations when required. Lourdes received $3.900 to provide specialized education to physical therapists. They matched these funds with $2,600 toward actual training and $2,016 in participants’ wages.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lourdes hosted a regional training for all physical therapists to attend and obtain continuing education credits, which are critical to their ability to provide state-of-the-art services. The PTs were able to maintain their credentials in a tough marketplace and a recessed economy. A total of twelve (12) participants completed the training and earned 16 continuing education credits each.
