Meet Cain

Workforce Challenge

Cain was working toward a GED and was looking for employment for the summer before he planned to go to college. He had only worked in fast food restaurants before and was interested in the IT field. Cain was unsuccessful in getting an internship with the Open Media Foundation due to its focus on college seniors or graduates with experience. Cain got a job at FedEx ground, but promptly quit due to poor working conditions and was interested again in a WIOA internship.

Workforce Solution

The Adams County youth program Business Development Representative did outreach to municipal IT departments and private IT companies. With no employers available including Adams County's IT department, the Business Development Representative eventually reached out to the Broomfield Workforce Center Youth Employment Specialist to see if their county's IT department did internships with them. Although they had not, they helped make the connection and the City and County of Broomfield IT department agreed to have Cain as an intern.

Outcomes & Benefits

Cain interviewed and began working at the county office. He is making an impressive wage because he is working in an entry-level IT role with computer support. He helps with software installation, data elimination and security, managing the queuing system, and other IT projects that will be relevant hands-on experience for his career pathway. He is making great progress and plans to go to college early for computer science after finishing his GED in the next few months.
