Meet Erik

Workforce Challenge

Erik was a young adult who left school and needed to get his GED. He was not attending school or working. He had no career goals in mind, but was also looking for employment.

Workforce Solution

Erik enrolled in the Adams County Youth Succeed Program to work towards obtaining a GED. He began taking prep classes offered onsite at the workforce center. While working on his GED, he was offered an internship. He said he was interested in working with animals, so he interviewed with the Adams County Animal Shelter. The worksite supervisor said he was a great fit for the shelter and offered him a position as a Kennel Assistant. Working at the Adams County Animal Shelter fit well with his transportation needs and would allow him to continue to make progress on his GED.

Outcomes & Benefits

Erik did an excellent job at his internship. He learned work skills as well as technical skills related to animal care. His coworkers gave him glowing reviews, and he exhibited a strong work ethic at the animal shelter. Erik is continuing to work towards his GED and plans to take the official tests soon. He is now interested in pursuing a career in the veterinary field and attending post-secondary education to pursue this career pathway.
