Workforce Challenge

Kevin had been in trouble with the Court System. His family and friends stood by him during his incarceration, trying to encourage him not to give up on himself. His mother would travel back and forth from New Orleans to check on him, showing him unconditional love and helping him stay positive. As a way of thanking all his loved ones for their support, Kevin decided he was going to get his GED and change his life for the better.

Workforce Solution

Kevin came to the Education and Training Institute (ETI) office for information about the GED program. Kevin was asked if he was ready to commit to GED training. He stood straight up and said “yes ma’am, this is right where I want to be”. Kevin wanted to get his GED and work with the on-the-job training program. Kevin enrolled in the ETI WIA program on March 8, 2010 and passed his test on his first attempt.

Outcomes & Benefits

After receiving his GED Kevin attended a City Board of Aldermen meeting with ETI staff and was unanimously approved for the Work Experience Program with the Street Department. Upon completion of his work experience, Kevin was hired as a permanent employee. Kevin felt so good about success that he also enrolled at the local County VocTech Center to pursue certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). His NCCER training will provide him with an OSHA 10-hour card and referral for employment consideration with the new Lignite plant opening in Kemper County, MS.
