Meet Angel

Workforce Challenge

Angel, his wife and child found themselves homeless and living in a hotel with his 13 other family members. CSBG was paying for housing but only temporarily. Neither Angel nor his wife had a job or a high school diploma or equivalent. In order to obtain housing and pay for the expenses of a child, Angel needed work and an education.

Workforce Solution

AmeriCorps was called to attend a meeting with the family and community outreach specialist (CSBG) and determined Angel a good fit for the AmeriCorps chainsaw crew. Angel then was introduced to a WIOA case manager who began work with him on his GED and post education needs. In the meantime, Angel and his wife began participating in the TANF program for temporary assistance.

Outcomes & Benefits

In May, Angel enrolled as an AmeriCorps members and began work. In June, he earned his Faller Class 3 chainsaw certification and shortly after moved into an apartment with only his wife and child. In September, Angel took his final test and earned his GED. Angel is still receiving TANF and getting help from his WIOA case manager. He will complete his AmeriCorps term in October and plans to re-enroll in the program.
